The movie sends a message to common man that despite being of lots of corrupt politicians and officials, there is still a hope when a young and honest politician will lead from the front and change the system. In the movie Arjun Prasad (Rana Daggubati) joins politics to fulfill his father’s dream to make politics neat and clean. Movie Review: Ye Maya Chesave

1‘Ye Maaya Chesaavu’ is unlike any desi romantic comedy, with a vision so wondrously off-kilter that you’ll be swept off your feet by it, even if you don’t fall in love at first sight. The film plays like a writer’s scrap pile of good ideas, personal growing up experiences, and love for masala movies all mixed together in one project that director Gautham Menon seems to have made for the pure fun of it.This offbeat Telugu feature, starring newbies Naga Chaitanya and Samantha is consistently interesting, always intelligent and surprisingly provocative in the most unexpected of ways. No doubt ‘Ye Maaya Chesave’ is a very idiosyncratic take on the genre, but it works because of Menon’s ability to challenge viewer expectations. The product is joyfully alive with possibility, from a filmmaker willing to take big gambles and force them to pay off, and with a lead actor (Chaitanya) who has the courage to redefine his dubious ‘Josh’ image. ‘Ye Maaya Chesave’ is easily one of the best and most exciting Telugu movies of all time, it signals the arrival of a metamorphosis in the tired, often tread desi romantic fillum formula. The force of the film derives from its interesting characters and the unconventional romantic angle that we have come to love and adore. Boy (Naga Chaitanya) is a college grad with dreams of becoming a filmmaker. He is besotted by his upstairs neighbour (Samantha) who happens to be a tad older and a Malayali Christian. Girl too falls for him, but her father fixes her marriage. She can’t go against her family, he can do little about it.
The remainder of the story follows the Boy’s grit and journey towards achieving his dream of becoming an acclaimed film director, and that’s where the originality sets in. Sure, there are some moments that are disappointingly undernourished but they don’t outweigh the ones with sheer brilliance.AR Rahman’s soundtrack is magical, and together with the gorgeous imagery (M Paramahamsa, Rajeevan) it serves for a visual song of vulnerability, with a rhythm vaulting from discord to harmony and back again in vibrating organic-colored tones, as if the whole film were breathing on its own. ’Ee Hridayam’ in particular is extraordinary what with its swoony lyricism and unearthly vocals. Naga Chaitanya has evolved well post ‘Josh’, and has undoubtedly learned a lot from the maverick director Menon. Samantha’s character is not entirely convincing but her screen presence certainly is.
Final verdict? ‘Ye Maaya Chesave is a giddy delight. Its effect is intoxicating. Anyone in need of some superior escapism should see it straightaway.

Movie Review: Karthik Calling Karthik

kthikrvwThe first rule of Fight Club is – you do not make an outdated movie. Wait, what? Lets back up a bit. While walking into the screening of ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ my mobile phone rang, and a sneering, grating voice spoke: ‘This is Farhan speaking. I do know howto make an effective psychological thriller. I know I must keep viewers guessing, provide several solid jolts, and finally lead the awesome build up to a perfectly acceptable ending. Heck I could even add a few more twists to satisfy the die hardest of my fans. But not this time. Karthik forced me to make a bad film. He wants to kill my acting career. He said its for the greater good. So this time I will rob you in broad daylight. This time I annoy you with unintentional comedy. You Are Finished! FINISHED!’
At exactly five in the morning, for reasons I can only share with Vijay Lalwani I woke up and began writing this review. Farhan Akhtar produced and stars in this generally lunatic, occasionally pathetic and more often comically inept endeavor. ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ isn’t a film, it’s a catalog of cliched dialogue. Its a boring, formulaic mix of psycho babble and Wikipedia recitation. The only element of suspense is whether the movie will show the trailer of ‘Housefull’ before the closing credits roll.
The biggest disappointment is that ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ does open with its mind nicely intact, but suffers a major crisis about 40 minutes in, then bad turns to worse. Although the first part of ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ overflows with delicious suspense and atmosphere, the film’s plot soon becomes its helpless protagonist. What we get is a profoundly stupid affair, that populates its hackneyed and obsolete storyline with cardboard characters and performers who value cash above credibility. Nothing is as it seems, because nothing matters in the least.
The dark, rainswept scene between Farhan and Deepika near the Bandra Worli sea link after the interval assures you that the storyline has indeed turned into a lame-brained nut job in desperate search of a different plot twist. The dense rain that falls is no natural rain, it’s runoff from world cinema’s bilge tank of recycled ideas. The characters are as poorly developed as the concept. A doctor (Shefali Shah) arrives at Karthik’s home to figure out the mystery behind the call, but runs away. Then Shonali (Deepika) arrives at Karthik’s home for the same, only to run away. The outlandishness of it all makes you want to make a dash for it as well. And because you can’t bear to think that Farhan would betray us, you keep trying to convince yourself that ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ is trying to be more than what it seems.
Performances veer from outstanding to wooden. Its heartbreaking to see the incredibly versatile Farhan in this film – his gait, his range and finer nuances are commendable. Deepika looks hot – her acting’s not. Her dialogue delivery is deadpan, while her expressions are nonexistent. Vijay Lalwani’s direction suffers due to his own unimaginative script. The cinematography by Sanu Varghese is top notch, and SEL’s excellent music goes well with Midival Punditz & Karsh Kale’s snappy background score. However, the film’s merits are crushed by the pressure of the story’s big revelation (or the lack of it) which makes you feel totally cheated.
Final verdict? When some people talk about how much they hated 2005’s Tamil film ‘Anniyan’ for being unreasonably unviable, I think they must mean this film.

yem maya chesavo review

2afeb7lMovie Name :Yem Maaya Chesavo
Movie Rating : U/A
Casting : Naga chaitanya and Samantha
Music : A.R.Rahman
Lyrics : Anantha Sriram
Director : Gowtham Menon
Producer :: Manjula and Sanjay Swarup
Banner :: Indira Productions
Story Line :
A touching love story, the story begins with Karthik (Naga chaitanya) who is an aspiring director and when he applied to the college, he was on his efforts. His life changed when he saw Jesse (Samantha), the daughter of his owner. He is smitten by her and from then on, he begins to woo her. But then, not so Jesse moves to encourage not as she is a staunch Kerala Christian family, and moreover, she is older than Karthik. Karthik, but determined and not give up. At one point, she reveals her true feelings and just when things Karthik everything is in order, his life takes a turn. What is it turn? How will he handle it? all this forms the rest of the story
Presentataion :
The director has come up with a thoughtful romantic story and he has excelled in both his presentation and narration. The dialogues were simple but deep, the script was fabulous and the screenplay was top notch. Background score was a bit disturbing at times but overall okay. Two songs were good but the picturisation of them was excellent. Full marks to cinematography and the way each angle and moment is captured. The single shot scenes were exemplary. Editing was crisp. Costumes were stylish and decent, art department was highly creative. Naga Chaitanya did a good job for his role but he must get a bit easy on the soft emotions like tears. Samantha has ruled the roost and she will simply capture the young hearts. Krishnudu brought in some smiles, the others were regular and contributed as required.
What’s good ?
Since the promotion for the movie had started and till I’ve seen it, the buzz was always that the new Gautham Menon film is in town. It was not the new Naga Chaitanya film or anything else. And even after the film’s over, the director reminds us again that his films belong to him the most than any of his stars.
Half of the soundtrack composed by the two time academy winner was perfect for the mood and the montage in particular was a perfect fit.
The Puri Jagannath, Gautham Menon, Shimbu and other well inserted cameos were refreshing. And also the film in a film concept being put to good use.
What could have been better.
Gautham Menon could have explored a new genre of song making.
The occasional drags in the film should have been taken care of.
Conclusion:
The feel of the film is quite realistic and it is without doubt that eight out of ten people will relate to it. This is a journey of nostalgia and tender emotions and no exaggerations in saying that couple of scenes wrenched the heart. While the first half is more on the entertaining and lighter emotions side, the second half is serious and emotional but it is here that the film scores the best. The technical values and production values take the film to a new league and with few powerful scenes, the impact is much stronger. This is purely for the class and mature audience and it could be that a minimal percentage of masses may also connect with it. At the box office, this deserves a hit.

Maro Charitra 2010 Review

maro-charitra_(2010)Cast : Varun Sandesh,Anitha
Producer : Dil Raju
Director : Ravi ( Hindi Race Director)
Rating : 1.5/5
What is it about?
A remake of Balanchander’s ‘Maro Charithra’ with a few changes in the basic premise material.
Plot
Instead of a neighbor dispute between a Telugu and Tamil family like 1973 feature, the makers of this remake had set it up in the United States in which the Balu (Varun Sandesh) of this film is an NRI kid who knows very little Telugu. The two leads fall in love for no apparent reason and the rest of the tale is what most you already know. The parents disagree – the couple decides to prove their love by staying apart for an year – the acquaintances Balu and Swapna (played by new comer Anitha) have within this year and the end which is a little different from the original film.
What’s good?
NOTHING. Absolutely nothing about this film was even remotely bearable.
What’s not good?
From what you’ve read above you can easily deduce the answer to what’s not good. The screenplay to begin with. It was dull, slow, terribly clichéd and painfully brainless. The two and half hour movie seemed like more than half a day, a head aching half day. The camera work was talking to us constantly and it was saying only one thing : ‘I DON’T HAVE A CLUE OF WHAT I’M DOING”.
The ‘not too bad’ songs were ruined because of  unfit placement and brainlessness radiating song visuals. The background score was so over done that it had contributed a lot to the film’s overall foolish look. And to further extend this passage we have the costume department, their idea of dressing up people is definitely not of this planet.
The Acting.
Varun Sandesh seemed like one of those new female leads of a C-grade film who keep acting with their hands and make us laugh with every single gesture of theirs. His style would have worked if the film was a parody.
The new girl (Anitha) will be talked about for the next few weeks by all the poor souls who have been subjected to this torture of a film. Such a disastrous performance never goes unnoticed. In the midst of all this Shradha Das seemed like a Shabhana Azmi with an ‘okay’ presentation.
Synopsis.
One needs guts and a lot of patience to sit through this film. The film should have been rated as ‘RHB’ instead of ‘U/A’.
RHB – Restricted for Human Beings.

Hum Tum Aur Confusion

Cast:Arshad Warsi,Diya mirza,Boman Irani .
Director: Kabir Kaushik
Rating:2/5Review
Arshad Warsi (Armaan) is a high flying photographer whose personal life is in the doldrums. Due to his penchant for the bottle he’s about to mess up both his personal and professional life. His girlfriend Gehna (Dia Mirza) vacillates between loving him intensely or wanting to dump him and move on in life. Because his alcoholism isn’t the real problem! Arshad is seeing a psychiatrist as he hears voices all the time especially at home when he’s alone. So he drinks himself silly, sleeps at railway stations only to run away from the sound of these voices. But nothing seems to work. Till one day Arshad is convinced that he can actually communicate with souls who haven’t become angels. Souls who are spiralling the earth because they have some unfinished business to be taken care of! His doctor is convinced it’s schizophrenia. Dia is torn between wanting to believe the doctor or trusting her instincts….
The first half of the film retains a light peppy mood despite the seriousness of the situation. Most of the outdoors have been shot in London  and the film has an interesting look and feel to it. Zippy cars, great cafes, a fantastic duplex apartment all succeed in imparting the film with a happy look.
Arshad has his capable assistant Sandhya Mridul (Mini) to take care of him while he is at work. Sandhya Mridul may not have much work but she does take good care of her body. She brings the same energy onto the screen that she has in her earlier films Page 3 andHoneymoon Travels Private Limited.
Dia is the surprise package of the film. She has shed oodles of weight and might just be successful in making a transition from being a supporting actress to becoming a leading lady. Arshad thankfully has distanced himself from his ‘circuit’ personality. His performance especially in the first half is restrained rather than overplayed.
Boman Irani tries very hard, but his character doesn’t have any dialogues or scenes which make an impact. Such a pity because in the right role this versatile actor has the audience eating out of his hand!
Ashwin Mushran the ruthless son from Lage Raho Munnabhai (who dumps his father into an old age home) is back and he plays a similar character all over gain.
The plot contradicts itself. On one hand ghosts are people who know instinctively what is happening on earth, and on the other handArshad is asked to locate people who disappeared 30 years ago.
It’s in the second half that the director gets the genre totally confused. The film suddenly turns into a tearjerker. Agreed Arshad only wishes to help people who are in a genuine crisis. But did it have to be so melodramatic?
The film is short but the climax could have been far shorter. It seems stretched and contrived and Arshad hams it up especially towards the end.
Apart from being the producer, Arshad is also one of the co-writers ofthe film. The premise of the film has its heart in the right place. But the script doesn’t evolve from one scene to the other. It resembles a car that lurches forward again and again moving a few feet ahead before it comes to a slow and agonizing halt.
The music is by Shankar Ehsaan Loy  and lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Yet not a single line remains with you as you leave the auditorium.

Story:
A stale tale, the story begins with Sandy/ Sandeep (Arjun) who is all set to go to America as he gets a job there. Though he lives a modern lifestyle, he is an idealist at heart and believes inarranged marriage. He also wants to have the marriage in the old age style for five days and waits until ‘Jeelakarra Bellam’ to see the face of the bride. He gets his dream girl in the form of Deepthi (bhanu) and on the wedding day, an incident occurs and Deepthi gets kidnapped. All this formsthe rest of the story.

Presentation:
The director has come up with a flimsy storyline and both his presentation and narrative were a letdown. The dialogues were weak, the script was pathetic and the screenplay was annoying. Background score was good at places but two songs were worth humming. Cinematography scored only during songs but otherwise it was average. Editing was raw, costumes were impressive and the art department worked hard to get laudable appreciations. Coming to the cast, this will be a surprise for Allu Arjun fans, he is rather meek and not much fire is seen in him. Bhanu Mehra was just okay and is not worth the hype. Arya was effective but his role was not. Ashish Vidyarthi, Suhasini, Naresh, Vinaya, Anita, Nasser, Rao Ramesh had very brief roles. Brahmi was not required. Ahuti Prasad was wasted, the others didn’t have much to offer.
Conclusion:
The film created a lot of hype regarding its proper Telugu wedding and the heroine factor but both of them have turned out to be a damp squib. The film takes off on a wrong footing and there is no voltage in it. The second half gets further complicated and the final nail on the head is hit with the bizarre climax. Barring few places where the technical values are good, the film has nothing at all and the blame is completely the director’s. Despite having lavish budget and efficient cast, he has not been able to deliver a proper product. The film will not survive for more than two weeks.

Story
Betting Bangaraju (Naresh) is a well-off village lad whose occupation in life is to bet on anything and everything under the sun which leads to him being constantly ridiculed by the villagers. Due to this attitude, he is rejected on a marriage proposal since the girl believes that only city-boys are smart. Taking this as a challenge, Bangaraju lands up in Hyderabad to fall in love & get married to a city girl. After a couple of disastrous meetings with random girls, he bumps into Divya (Nidhi) &  flips for her. The twist is when Divya brings all her four suitors (including Bangaraju) together for a week in her village since she wants her family to choose her groom. The second half is set during the seven days where Bangaraju wins the entire family over with his helpful antics while putting the other suitors out of the race with his smart moves. Needless to say, Bangaraju walks away with the girl with everyone’s approval.
What is Good: The comic scenes & witty one-liners between Naresh & other characters such as Krishna Bhagwan, JP & others evoke quite a few laughs. Naresh gives it his best shot since the role is tailor-made for him to utilize his trademark humor. The movie stays clear from double-meaning dialogues and fight sequences as well. The rest of the cast including Kota Srinivas Rao pitch in with good performances
What is bad: The movie relies too much on the humorous scenes in trying to keep the audience engaged & this is what drags it down. Though the movie has many humorous episodes, they are spaced out so much that you start losing interest in the interim. Apart from that, none of the songs stay with you while the heroine (Nidhi) is just about average.Me Thinks: It’s a one-time watch if you are Allari Naresh fan or if you are looking for a timepass movie!
Tailpiece: A Rayalaseema faction leader, a Telangana real-estate baron, a NRI chess grandmaster & our very Betting Bangaraju make up the four interesting suitors !!!
